Choosing Colors for an Open Floor Plan

Open floor plans are very popular these days. They allow everyone to enjoy being together, even while doing different tasks in different rooms. With an open floor plan, you have to be careful about how you decorate. You can’t just throw any colors up on the walls and be done. Choosing colors for an open floor plan takes some serious consideration, but it will be worth the effort in the end. The following are some things to consider.

Don’t Go Overboard

When choosing colors, don’t go overboard on the number of colors you use. Sticking to three to five colors for the entire space is sufficient. With this amount, you should be sure to incorporate something light, some neutrals, and a supporting color or two.

Utilize an Accent Color

With a light color and a couple of neutrals, your accent color should really pop. There are generally some interesting angles and features where you can splash your accent color. You can also incorporate that same paint color into the décor, such as in an area rug or throw pillows. It’s also okay to use your accent color in multiple areas, such as along the west side of the kitchen and the east side of the adjacent living room.

Consider Tone on Tone

If you’d rather keep the pop of color to your décor, consider using a tone on tone color palette. The idea of this is to choose one color in three or four different tones. The first room could be one tone, and as you move from room to room, the tone can change just slightly. This gives distinction to each room, while still allowing for an open feel.
